No fairytale

I have always wanted to be a writer. When I was 10, I wrote a fairytale about a prince on a quest to find a magical flower. I remember starting with great enthusiasm, which faded when I was around the midpoint. Then things became hard. The only thing that kept me returning to it was the fact that my classmates wanted me to enter a story contest on their behalf so we could win a trip to a theme park. I finished, and dutiful delivered it to my teacher. Thoroughly unrevised of course.

We didn’t go to the theme-park.

Writing Excuses or: I Dream of Henry

Every writer procrastinates I think (and if you don’t, do NOT tell me). My favorite pass time is PROCRASTACLEARING, cleaning already clean objects is what I do, or I move things around. I also vacuum way too often.

That’s the reason why I’m going to buy myself a Henry when I ever get an agent/ sell a book/ get published. It’s my ultimate writer goal.

Look at him smile.

An old fashioned typed up post Hmmm Maybe I should change the title into: a picture of an old fashioned typed up post. And now I wonder how many words you can fit in this title space, and will keep on typing until something says PING. Oh no wait that doesn’t happen on a computer. So what if there’s is no end to this space and I end up typing forever. AHHHH I’m going to stop. Now. Did you know someone tried to figure out how many rows you can add in an excel sheet and that it takes about a day (I forgot the exact numbers). Now I am really going to stop. For real. Stop Irene. Step away from the keys.

Try, Try & Try Again

Because it’s probably boring if I type an entire post about the word “try” I livened it up with pictures of The Avocado Project. Here goes:

Step one ->

Buy an Avocado

Step two -> Eat an Avocado (sorry no pictures of this event)

Step three->Dry for a couple of days

Step four ->Put sticks into it so it can dip in water

Step five –eight

Wait, wait and wait some more. (think of ridiculous names for your plant to be.

Step nine

Start over again (because cat thought Avocado Project was a ball)

Side note: I did not overestimate my avocado growing skills and had a plan B.

What have I learned up to this point? Well, for one thing that I’m not a supertalented avocado grower. I am not sure if they are upside down, or if that even matters. I also learned it’s not wise to put my avocado-in-process pots within the reach of my cats.

update: they didn’t grow because I kind of forgot about them.

Atlantis

WP_20170805_15_47_45_Pro (2).jpgBonjour from Bretagne!

A short post to inform you that I’ve found the stairway to Atlantis (picture above). The entrance fee is a seagull feather, your first memory of the sea and a starfish, in case you ever found yourself knocking on the doors of this underwater world. A small price to pay, trust me.

Picture Perfect Copenhagen

Last weekend I was in Copenhagen, some highlights:

  1. Tivoli Gardens: a permanent fair in the middle of town, which happens to be very old & cool.
  2. The food is awesome. Vegetarian/organic heaven.
  3. Houses with different colors (always a good thing in my humble opinion).
  4. Botanical garden! The plants here rule their glass kingdom like something I’ve never seen before.

So if you ever go to Copenhagen make sure not to miss these things ( Tivoli, FOOD, Look at the Houses, be Jealous of Plants because they live in a Glass Palace).

P.S. You can click on the pictures to see what they’re supposed to represent, some are kind of blurry.

A Short (& Slightly) Melodramatic Post on Editing

So I wrote this mess of a story.

Lots of words, but not enough and probably not the right ones. Plot holes around every corner, characters doing not- interesting stuff to/with other non-interesting characters. No description or too much of it. And of course : clichés that will make you cringe. I’m at that point that I’ve read the first chapters so many times, I not only lost all objectivity, but every single word seems wrong somehow.

But amidst all this misery there’s an occasional gem. A sentence exactly right, a character delightfully wicked. And when I say occasional I mean: this is it, exactly one right sentence and one character I like.  hahahaha

So I’m gradually moving along, endlessly deleting, putting whole scenes in The Folder of Lost Words, hoping they will still fit somewhere but knowing they probably won’t. Making up new things that will inevitably cause so many problems further up the road.

Such fun this editing thing.

Stargazing

The night sky has always fascinated me.

Did you know that when you’re looking at the stars, you’re actually gazing into the past? Light takes time to travel and those glittering bulbs are many many light years away , so you could be gazing upon a star that doesn’t even exist anymore.

Fascinating is it not? (It is!).

Last weekend my boyfriend and I went to Lattrop (a small Dutch town near Germany) and spent the weekend in a star cube. Our 9m2 villa looked like this:

It was such good fun! We made morning fires and had our own telescope ( which we didn’t use, because I didn’t know how and I don’t like asking people for help).
